13 Feb 2012: Negerkuss

13 Feb: Negerkuss from kate hers on Vimeo.

Location: Berlin, Germany

Word or Expression: der Neggerkuss

Closest English Translation: Chocolate covered marshmallow treats, Whippet cookie (also called Mohrenkopf: Moor’s head or Black person’s head, Schokokuss)

Literal Translation: negro kiss, nigger kiss

You would not call someone a Negerkuss as an insult, but I include this word in the Schimpfwort category of my project for its obvious connection to several Schimpfwörter, namely negro and nigger.

wikipedia: The term Negro’s Kiss fell out of favor in with usage in west, southwest Germany and also Switzerland because of the racist connotations. The product name is now officially Chocokiss, Creamkiss, and others.

However, in Berlin, I hear a lot of white Germans calling it Negerkuss when there are no black people there to hear them. Do you think it’s racist? Some Germans claim that it’s just the political correctness that comes from the United States which has pressured many companies to change the label. Additionally, because neger means colored/negro it has no relationship to the English term nigger, so it shouldn’t be seen as being a problem. I come to the conclusion that many Germans think that only spiteful and very overtly negative images or ideas can be racist, which I find totally naive. Germans are still unfortunately doing black face on the stage but I must admit, it’s not as bad as in the Netherlands.

And something really disturbing – Negerkuss has it’s own Facebook page. Man, where is the dislike button? https://www.facebook.com/pages/Negerkuss/110549182306175

A very special thank you to the American artist Jean-Ulrick Désert for taking part in my project.

Hi Kate, we call it “Schokokuss”… und damit fühlen wir uns wohler 🙂

I have had sooooo many discussions with this about Germans. Some will say, “oops, never thought about it that way.” But I also had too many say “it’s not offensive, we’ve called it that way for years, bla bla bla”. Super annoying. I even heard a German woman ask her half black child if she wanted a Negerkuss. Really? Come on, join the 21st Century and leave the word Neger where it belongs. . . in the 3rd Reich.
